Even Your PA Needs a Holiday: Keeping Your Business Covered This Summer

Funny thing about hiring really good support: after a while, you start to forget there’s a person behind it. Someone who also fancies two weeks in the sun without wondering whether the inbox is quietly turning into a disaster back home. It’s exactly why proper PA cover for summer holidays matters more than most businesses realise.

We see it every summer with our clients. The school holidays hit, flights get booked, out-of-office replies start popping up everywhere, and right around then, we get the same nervous message. “So… what happens while she’s away?”

It’s a fair question. But it’s worth saying plainly: your PA needs a holiday just as much as you do. The businesses that handle this well aren’t the ones who avoid the problem. They’re the ones who plan for it, so nobody comes back in September to a backlog that takes a fortnight to dig out from.

The Bit Everyone Forgets Until It’s Too Late

Annual leave isn’t really the issue. The issue is that most of us only start thinking about cover once the leave is already booked and staring back at us from the calendar.

By that point, your choices aren’t great. You end up leaning on someone else who’s already busy, letting things quietly pile up until your PA’s back, or trying to find last-minute help who’s never seen your inbox before and has no idea how you like things run. It works, sort of. It’s just not what good support is supposed to feel like.

What Cover Should Actually Feel Like

At Crystal Clara, we don’t treat cover as a scramble. When your PA is away, someone else on our team steps in who already knows the account: how you like your inbox handled, which meetings need protecting, which clients need a bit more care than others. It’s the small stuff, basically, that makes support feel like support rather than a stranger reading from a manual.

Your emails still get looked at. Anything urgent still gets flagged. Meetings still get moved around when they need to be. Nothing gets left in a pile marked “deal with it later.” Later is exactly when it becomes a problem.

Done properly, you shouldn’t really notice the switch happened at all.

Sort It Before They Go, Not After

If you already know your PA has leave coming up, the best time to think about cover is now, not the Friday before they fly out. A proper handover means whoever’s stepping in actually knows what they’re doing, and it means your PA can genuinely switch off instead of quietly checking emails from a sun lounger because they’re worried what they’ll find when they’re back.

Good cover isn’t about pretending nothing’s changed while someone’s on leave. It’s about making sure you and your clients never have to think about it either way.

Let Them Actually Switch Off

We started Crystal Clara because we think support should feel considered and genuinely human, not just efficient. That goes for the people doing the supporting too. A PA who’s had a real break comes back better at their job: more focused, more on it, just generally happier to be there. And a business that’s planned properly for that break doesn’t lose a single day while it’s happening.

So if you’ve got summer cover on your mind, whether that’s a specific bit of leave to plan around or just wondering how ad hoc support might help during a busy patch, come and talk to us about it.

Get in touch with Crystal Clara today and let’s make sure nobody’s holiday, including your PA’s, comes at the cost of your business.
